I used to believe the same thing. 
In Eastern Mysticism they ask: "Who am I?" 
In Western Esotericism they ask: "What am I?" 
These technologies, while sharing similar underlying machinery, are geared specifically for diametrically oppositional purposes.  
In the east they look inward by looking outward and thus perceive the microcosmos. 
In the west they look outward by looking inward and thus perceive the macrocosmos.
Both the microcosmos and the macrocosmos exist betwixt themselves.  To say one exists but not the other is to replace one delusion for another.
If one only looks inward, that's all they will perceive.

I'm doing my best to remains as sceptical and objective as possible while experiencing these things.
Yes, this shit is hella weird and while it does shatter the materialist view that "magic doesn't real" it must have a more logical explanation than is presented by the theologically inclined.
For the third eye I scoured studies wherein the subjects were experiencing similar effects to what I was perceiving.
The studies varied as did the causation of increased blood flow and/or extreme magnetic pressure to said areas but the end results were the same.
Could I be wrong? Hell yes. Correlation is not causation.  I highly suggest you remain sceptical of my hypothesis. Look into the subject and judge for yourself.

Accidental possession happens all the time. Possessed or not, it can be extremely difficult prying any truthful information from a non-local spirit, especially in regards personal information.
So much so that even though we have been summoning them all throughout history we still have no idea what they actually are. 
A companion spirit has no time limit. They will come and go as they please or whenever you call for them.
When they are older I suggest putting the object they are binded to in the box when you sleep, that way they can sleep too. 
Never close the lid unless they are misbehaving and need a "time out". It traps them inside and can make them feel like they are prisoners.
If they are young they'll prefer that you keep the object with or beside you at all times because they find your presence comforting and may become frightened if you are not near them, like a child.
Besides, if you ever fall into sleep paralysis and are attacked by fear eaters (shadow people or black mists) or end up actually being possessed by a non-local spirit your companion is a MUCH more
powerful spirit and can easily kick their ass. :3

My GF suffers from extreme anxiety and uses a similar technique called the "astral temple" that Andrieh Vitimus pioneered.

I highly recommend ASMR as another excellent alternative for people that want to achieve gnosis but suffer from ADHD or anxiety.
Like hypnosis it doesn't work for everyone but it can be a godsend for those that it does as it not only requires zero effort (it works in seconds) but gets you high in the process (bonus!).
Hop onto youtube and see if it's effective and if so either use something in a language you don't understand or a "no talking" video. Just as the tingly euphoria kicks in switch over to "no thought"
and you'll achieve gnosis with incredible ease.

As for advice on modifications to your current method there are a few tricks that may be useful:
Step 1: Try observing yourself from a third person. Once successful detach and imagine that you are not your body (if that makes sense). Imagine that you are the surrounding environment itself. 
Step 2: Communicate with and befriend your superconscious. Shower them with (honest) affection. Keep the dialog going for as long and often as possible.
Step 3: You'll see. Don't rush in if you're not ready.
